How to Prepare for a Hydrotherapy Session

Hydrotherapy is a water based exercise program that helps minimise the compressive forces on the body. The warm water can have a therapeutic effect reducing muscle spasms and pain, whilst providing a mild resistance to improve strength and endurance.

To ensure a comfortable and effective hydrotherapy experience, follow these steps before attending your session:

1
Wear Comfortable Swimwear

Choose swimwear that allows you to move freely.

2
Bring a Towel and Water Bottle

Before and after your session, it is recommended that you drink a lot of water to maintain your body temperature. While in the pool, you will require a towel to help you dry your body after the session.

3
Arrive Early

It is recommended that you arrive a few minutes early for the session so you can talk with your physiotherapist about any issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy, also known as aquatic therapy, involves performing exercises in a heated pool under the guidance of a skilled physiotherapist. The buoyancy of the water reduces the strain on your joints and muscles, making it an ideal treatment for individuals with mobility issues, joint pain, or those recovering from surgery. The warmth of the water also helps to relax muscles, improve blood flow, and promote healing. At Yates Physiotherapy, we use hydrotherapy to help patients recover, build strength, and improve flexibility in a safe and supportive environment.

What conditions can hydrotherapy help with?

Hydrotherapy is beneficial for a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, neurological disorders, and chronic pain conditions. It can also help improve mobility and strength in those with limited movement.

Is hydrotherapy safe for everyone?

Hydrotherapy is generally safe for most people, but it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as open wounds, severe cardiovascular issues, or infections. All new clients are required to undergo an initial assessment with one of our experienced physiotherapists before joining our hydrotherapy classes. Our physiotherapists will assess your condition to ensure hydrotherapy is the right option for you.

Do I need to be a good swimmer to participate in hydrotherapy?

No, you don’t need to be a good swimmer to benefit from hydrotherapy. The exercises are conducted in a controlled, shallow water environment, and our physiotherapists will be there to support and guide you throughout your session.

How many hydrotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required depends on your condition, recovery goals, and individual progress. After an initial assessment, our physiotherapists will develop a tailored hydrotherapy plan to suit your needs.
