The Benefits of Regular Physical Activity

Many people are aware of the general benefits of regular physical activity, reduced risk of heart disease, healthy joints, etc. But specifically, there are certain facts that, once you learn them, will actively motivate you to keep moving.

Firstly, what is the difference between physical activity and exercise? Physical activity is any bodily movement produced by muscles that expends energy. Alternatively, exercise is a sub-category of physical activity that is defined as being more planned, structured and repetitive. By following these two definitions, it is clear to see that there is more range and possibility as to what physical activity can be. Physical activity is for everyone and does not require you to solely exercise in a gym to be accomplished. Physical activity presents itself as many options; walking, running, cycling, swimming, water exercise, dancing, aerobics, strength training, hiking, rock climbing or group classes. One thing I advise patients is to pick something you are passionate about or to perform exercise with a friend. Friends keep you accountable, and if it’s something you are passionate about or interested in, it won’t feel like a chore. New hobbies lend themselves to meeting new people, whereas others can be suited to those who wish to be alone. The options are truly endless for physical activity.

The recommendations for physical activity are also surprisingly low. Each day, everyone should be active for 30 minutes. At least twice a week these exercise bouts should be 20 minutes long with increased intensity. This could be 2 more intense runs a week, a faster dance session or a brisker walk. That’s it. Paired with what I mentioned above regarding how varied the options are for physical activity, the requirements to satisfy these recommendations are actually quite low.

What are the benefits of physical activity? Being inactive contributes to a host of health issues. In fact, it increases our risk of at least 35 chronic diseases. Being physically active has many benefits for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, pain and mood, just to name a few. Many aggregated studies from the 21st century arrive at the conclusion that yes, put simply, physical activity does improve life expectancy. No matter your situation, it is never detrimental to be physically active. Having restrictions or limitations on this is what physiotherapists can help assist with.

Preventing problems is always going to be more convenient and cost effective than dealing with them when they rear their head. Physical activity is an easy way to assist with this.
